I am sad to record this sad news. Radio Commentary, whenever that happens next when a touring team visits, will be dull without him. There was only ONE Suresh Saraiya. May his soul rest in peace.Dinakar KRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10148152470155668711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567368472934030352.post-58230309030112349402011-02-13T03:55:46.415-08:002011-02-13T03:55:46.415-08:00It is true that listening to cricket commentary on...It is true that listening to cricket commentary on radio used to be a special joy. Commentators like Sushil Doshi, Anant chetalwad and Bapu Nadkarni made cricket even more interesting in those days. Our vintage radio MULLARD purchased in 1956 by my father which is in working condition till today made it possible for us to listen to cricket commentary. Now I use this valve radio for listening to music under Urdu Service, Radio Shri Lanka and Vividh Bharati. The Spectatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09779790864321543260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567368472934030352.post-81351424024987326992010-12-03T21:27:02.993-08:002010-12-03T21:27:02.993-08:00thanks for the lovely topic and narration.
one or...thanks for the lovely topic and narration.
one or two anecdotes:

When India beat West Indies in Seventies while chasing 400+. those days there were no live commentary;Air would give a capsule highlights with commentary of events that took place.
We had heard India had won the match in All India Radio news and we thought we should record the event when the highlight was shown.

As soon as Brijesh Patel scored the winning run, there was a tussle between the English commentator Suresh Saraiya and The Hindi commentator Ravi Chaturvedi;it was hell let loose! both are good commentators, mind you. but due to the epoch-making event,Ravi Chaturvedi lost his head and started blabbering thus in Hindi ( translated to English)

'India is a great country with great leaders like Akbar, Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi ( Emergency was on that time! so people had to do proper apple-polishing!)' then Ravi started sobbing... we played this recording again and again. It was hilarious.

Both were removed for sometime by AIR for fighting to snatch the microphone in public.

1.In a test match at Brabourne stadium, Venkataraghavan was given out by the straight umpire. Those days it was only radio commentary as Tv had not made its appearance. there was no third umpire, etc.
Unable to find out whether Venkat was given out LBW or CBW, the scorer ran to the ground to ask the umpire, how he gave Venkat out!
When this was going on, unfortunately Devaraj Puri, a very good commentator ( father of Dr. Narottam Puri a top ENT surgeon, and a better commentator and quiz master too) remarked how can Venkat be out even when scorer has doubts about his dismissal! As soon as people heard this comment on their little transisitors, the famous crowd at East Stand started ripping the thatched bamboo etc and set fire to the Stand! Play was called off for the day as it happened towards the end of the day!

commentators like Pearson Surita, Dicky Ratnagar, Micheal Charlton, Allan Mcgillvery,Anant Setalwad Johnny Moyes, brought the game right in front of your eyes the way they described;Vizzy would give the score only once in a session and you had to be all ears to catch it, otherwise you're a goner!ER Ramachandranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03891422598612007223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567368472934030352.post-6689059081473055162010-12-03T15:22:06.706-08:002010-12-03T15:22:06.706-08:00Truly those were glorious days, Dinu!

We, cricket lovers, did that so as to listen to the commentary from the first ball. And when the radio signals began to fade, how we tree to curse our fate or desperately search for an alternative frequency!
And that team of BBC commentators that you mention. What pleasure they gave us with descriptive powers! In fact We would look forward to a to rain so as to listen to some anecdotes!jothi's jottingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04886759879123655468noreply@blogger.com
